Assignment 7 + Love Handles

Heya all,
I haven't posted here in a while. My submission for Lesson 8 looks pretty ordinary, so I won't be posting that here. Here's my Assignment 7 and an extra piece!

Assignment 7 - Vectors and Layer Styles

Love Handles.
(I've got to get rid of my love handles.)

Love Handles (definition from Wikipedia):
Love handles, in colloquial or slang speech, are a layer of fat that is deposited around a person's midsection. They are called "love handles" because they can serve as places to hold on while copulating. Love handles are also colloquially called a spare tire.

So many people want to be thinner and thinner and thinner these days; it's insane.

As always, a gif to show you my painting process.

Hope you dig.

Assignment 6

Hey Everyone,
Here was my assignment, I cant really draw hair at all, i need alot of practise in learning to define clumps of hair - i find it really difficult as a beginner. I also gave her some little elf ears, i wanted to make her a bit cute and young looking, also i tried to pick a hairstyle that an young elf princess might wear and tried to tie in the hairstyle with the lovely expression that Bobby gave us as a starting point.
Arghhhhhh so difficult for me, im learning alot here!

project used the technique of lesson 1&2

Hi everyone,
this is the project I've working on right now, I'm trying to use the technique I learn from this class, but for the coloring part, I really have trouble for picking the color.
for the coloring layer, I only use the "color"mode because I'm so confuse how to choose the exact color before click the action button. so I'm basicly color directly on the "color mode"layer.so I can see exactly how the color turn out right away.
here are my question...
1. I'm not quite sure why Bobby use both "color" and "overlay" mode when coloring.
I find it really hard to get the color I want.
2.this painting took me forever to finish the b/w, and the color. does any other faster way to do it when the sketch is too complex?
3.when I choose the color, I'm basicly "guessing" the color before I pick it, I can't get the exactly color I wish for, is that correct?

I put the larger size of these two image in the below link,
http://www.cuteariel.com/tmp/forest.jpg
http://www.cuteariel.com/tmp/forestcolor.jpg

please please give me some advise. eventhough I'm finish this painting, I still feel so confuse.><.
thank you guys!!

tribute to Bobby's style:) practice assignment

Hello again peepz! I've tried out a painting of a creature, using Bobby Chiu's style, and allready excisting features of some of his creatures, so im not taking any credit:) (hope it is ok:) ).

I have become better at freehand paintings, but im still struggling a bit with the realistic parts. on this creature for instance, im having a hard time with the shadows is the face.
Can anyone of you fellow students help, or give me a hint? =) Thanks

Assignment 6 - The Surprised Bride

Hi again, everyone!
Here's my Assignment 6.

Althea!! I wanted to post my Assignment 6 earlier for you to see but when I was about done, I went to work on another image on Photoshop and after that I CLOSED PHOTOSHOP WITHOUT SAVING MY ASSIGNMENT! It wasn't a program error or anything; I closed it on my own! T_______T Argh. I was sleepy and I didn't even realize that I didn't save my work until when I went back to add some finishing touches the next day.

I was like, "OMG. OK. Ciaee. Breathe. Think of this as a chance to make the 2nd try better looking than the 1st." I hope I succeeded. =\ There goes my plans for handing in an extra piece though.

Painting process. (might take a while to load)

I love drawing/painting hair but getting the custom hair brushes to produce natural-looking locks was a PAIN. I created 8 hair brushes and used 5 for this painting alone. O_O Is that even practical?

My Little Monster

This is some of my latest work, which fortuitously coincides with Bobby working on his Weird Little Creatures book. Hope you guys like it. By the way, it been well over a year since I took Bobby's Digital Painting Class; hence why I'm not posting assignments.

Althea's week 5 and week 3

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd stop being slack and post something up here... ^^; Ok, so I do have an ulterior motive - I'd really love some critiques, particularly for the week 5 assignment since I don't feel it's complete yet and I do actually want to go back in and fix it up. (although I'm a bit flakey about this so I might not end up doing so anyway...)

This one's my week 3 assignment. I'm really posting it here just to make this post look a little bit better. XD I do have to say this was my third attempt... back when I had so much more time. >__<;

I'm a bit of a bum though, I haven't done any painting of my own. I was going to wait until I did one before I posted here but alas, I've concluded that I'm already neck deep in work. DX So I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. I've gotta concentrate on learning to draw better for a new job starting in December.

Anyways, take care fellow comrades!

Mariann, why did you delete your posts? D8

Hey Everyone,
Heres my old man painting from Assignment 5.

This was extremely frustrating for me - but I pushed through and again Ciaee was there to pick me up when I was at my very very worse time of FRUSTRATION. So huge huge huge thanks yous for Ciaee your the best!

Even though the submission was a tad late - Sorry Bobby! Can you guys give me critiques please so I can improove as much as possible ?

I found the hair to be really really difficult for me, and ive only just come to terms with wrinkles and values, I need to practise so much more.

I used Vivi's entry and Ciaee's entry for inspiration of my entry - i also thought he would look cool with some bling bling, so i gave him some Dolce & Gabanna's sitting there on the end of his nose.
Respect old man,..... Respect.

Assignment 5 + Extra

Here's my assignment for Lesson 5. I used the techniques taught in the video tutorial but did not strictly follow the order of the steps as demonstrated by Bobby. Painting this was a little frustrating but I found the smudge tool to be really really nice to use for smoothing out hair. Ummm, ignore the halo around him! >< The textures of his clothing were added with the technique taught in Lesson 4.

This is something I did extra. (A photo-reference was used.) Here, I didn't use the smudge tool to paint. The painting was mostly done using a basic hard edged brush in Photoshop. I then imported it into Painter and used the "Dry Palette Knife" to smudge the "paint" around, just to create that painterly effect. The brush works almost the same way as Photoshop's smudge tool, but resembles traditional paint a little more.

Where are all my classmates?! D: (Mariann! You removed all your posts! D:)

Emotion No.26: CURIOSITY

How are my fellow classmates doing?
I did another painting using the techniques taught in our class so far, as an extra assignment for Lesson 4 and also as an entry for the Liquid City Giveaway Draw-A-Robot Contest.

Emotion No.26: CURIOSITY

Very experimental. This is the first painting I did without starting off with lines. I blocked in a dark value pretty roughly, and then started to visualize and build on top of that. Slapped on some random textures + filters on some areas when I ran out of motifs and worked from there. Liquify is my new favourite Photoshop tool.

Random fact: Painting a bowl is harder than painting a cat.
Random tip: When in doubt, slap on some textures. (Doesn't work all the time.)

Fish-cyborg painting progress.
(A grossly simplified portrayal of my grueling 20+ hours on the fish)

I hope the animation isn't too fast. There were some steps missing because everything was kinda random at the beginning and I only started saving more often when something that looked pretty solid was emerging. The fish itself took maybe 20 hours or more to paint.

P/S: Bobby! Where are the critiques? D:

Hey Everyone,

Heres my kangamole final submission!

I worked all weekend - probably about 20 hours in total, and i had to submit as ive run out of time! I need to goto work in the morning!!!!

Thanks to all for the critiques and comments! Im learning so much from you guys - Its great to be a beginner in a class full of great painters, ive got nothing to loose!!!!

The attack of the Kangamole Bunnies.

Hi everyone! I hope everyone's having fun with Assignment 4!

Well, here's mine. Finished this one early so that I'll have time to work on it some more if we find anything wrong. To do that, I'll need critiques.. so, fire away!

Hi everyone, it is very exciting to meet you guys in the blogger!!
I'm an children's book illustrator from Taiwan. and live in Taiwan as well.
I've been working as a freelancer over 8 yrs, and by the time working with so many clients, I
feel myself not as passion as I used to be to the arts. I'm so glad to find schoolism and Bobby chiu, I've learn so much from this class and it really reminds me how passionate I used to be for arts while I'm in the college. I'm never been happier to be a student again! it's so nice to meet all of you! everybody are so fierce!! hah.

I'm not too satisfied about my 2nd assignment, I think I need to find another time to practice this technique more.

The 3rd assignment that I enjoy the most, so I did another small creture for a quick practice.
please don't feel hesitate to critic my work!

Monday, October 27, 2008

My first time to post in the blog, nice to meet you guys, these are the works I have done for bobby's class so far, critiques are very welcome.

First 3 Assignments + Armless Midgets

Hi everyone!

I'm so glad that Bobby created a blog for us. Was kinda bummed at first when I saw that there wasn't really a place for the students to interact. Thanks Bobby! I found some of our classmates on deviantART through their blogger profiles and got to see some of your personal artworks; it seems that we've got a lot of people from different backgrounds and countries and quite a variety of different styles. Which is awesome. :D Talked to Jon-Troy [Hazardous] on MSN so far, and hopefully more will join in. (I'm using the e-mail on my profile for my MSN account, so if you're on MSN add me up!)

Back to what's relevant, here are my first 3 assignments. Muscly (Metalic ><) Guy, The Stand and the, um, creature.

And here's my extra assignment for Lesson 2:

Gif animation to show painting progress.

Wanted to try out different skin tones. Did this with the techniques learned in Lesson 1 and 2. If anyone wants to try colorizing skin tones for practice, here's a larger version of my painting before adding color and before cleaning up. [link] If you post it anywhere else, please credit me.

Feel free to critique or even totally stomp on my work if you see anything wrong, because I really want to improve. Thanks in advance!

P/s: I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Ciaee, 22 this year, Malaysian Chinese, just graduated from art school, currently working (sort of) as a freelance illustrator, and love drawing and painting a lot... but prefer sleeping.
